SUV Hits Fire Truck Stopped For Fatal Accident: According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, a driver ran into the back of a fire truck parked at the scene of a fatal accident.
“He was talking on his cell phone and apparently not paying any attention to the fact that the traffic had slowed down,” said Lt. Jack Vaughn.
In the original incident, a man was killed after the car he was trying to repair fell on top of him. Smyrna Fire Chief Bill Culbertson tells WSMV there were 15 emergency personnel on the other side of the fire truck, and the accident with the SUV could’ve been much worse: “If the truck had not been where it was, there is a good chance several other people could have been injured if not killed.” Read and watch the full report here. No Seat Belt, No Santa: That’s the word in Pompano Beach, Florida. Larry Barszewski, Sun Sentinel, reports Santa had to find a new ride for the holiday parade after the firefighters union, in contract negotiations with the city, said all apparatus passengers had to be seated and belted.
“It places all liability on the driver-engineer and the person that supervises the driver,” said Rich Sandell, president of the Pompano Beach Professional Firefighters union. He denied that the refusal had anything to do with the negotiations.
The Broward County Sheriff’s SWAT team invited Santa to ride on its SWAT truck. Read Larry’s story here.
Pink Fire Truck Makes Debut: A very special apparatus made its debut in the North Bergen, New Jersey, WinterFest parade.
According to the Hudson Reporter, the truck was found by the Dan Peschetti, supervisor of the town’s Repair and Transit department. He, his brother, and the Department of Public works took the truck apart and painted it pink. Then, they donated it to the Guardians of the Ribbon, a group dedicated to the awareness of women with cancer. The truck is named Gemma, for the Peschetti’s mother, who died of lung cancer.
The Guardians of the Ribbon was founded by Phoenix, Ariz., firefighter Dave Graybill.
