ACCIDENTS:
Beckley, West Virginia, Pumper Rolls On Slick Roads: A lieutenant and 2 firefighters were taken to the hospital Sunday after their pumper slid and rolled over on the way to a call. Capt. Gary Raines described the accident to the Register-Herald:
“We were responding to a call that involved two vehicles on the corner of Sheridan Avenue and East Prince Street with Engine 1 and Command 1 from Station 1,” Raines said, “when the pumper (engine) slid, rolled onto its side and rolled over an embankment into a residence.”
“The truck is torn up but we thank God that the men do not appear to be seriously injured. The truck can be replaced but the men cannot,” he added.

Stimulus Money Provides New Tanker: Alma, Michigan, used $213,000 in stimulus funds to buy a new tanker. The remaining cost of the $225,000 truck from E-One will be paid for by the fire district. Linda Gittleman with the Morning Sun writes the old tanker wasn’t a proper tanker, and a pumper would also have to be called if it needed a refill. Zoning Administrator Dan Stasa says this new truck has a 3,500 gallon tank and a vacuum pump. He says it’s the first of its kind in the country. Read more here.
Open House In March For Holdingford, Minnesota’s Newest Truck: Members of the Holdingford Fire Department trained on the truck, a 2010 International Durastar Crew Cab with a Rosenbauer body, when they picked it up in mid-November. SANTA SIGHTINGS:
Fire Truck Delivers Marine Home For Christmas: A four-year-old in Somersworth, New Hampshire, ran to Santa as he stepped off the fire truck. Then, he noticed who stepped off the rig behind Santa. Aimee Lockhardt with the Foster’s Daily Democrat says Anthony Griffin had been asking his uncle, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Sanborn, when he’d be coming home. Sanborn told him Santa would bring him home, if little Anthony behaved. Sanborn was last home for Christmas in 2008 and won’t be home again next year. His two brothers are also deployed. Sanborn got the idea after talking to Anthony at Thanksgiving.
A couple of weeks ago, firefighter James Drakopoulos was on duty when he received a phone call from Sanborn asking for help surprising his nephew with his homecoming.
“A lot of the guys (on the fire department) are veterans,” Drakopoulos said, adding that he didn’t hesitate to assist. “And we usually try to help whoever we can with what they need … Everyone was willing to do whatever they could. These guys are serving our country.”
