County officials have a solution.
The Annapolis Capital reports the county will use an engine from a wrecked apparatus. Rivera Beach’s identical rig was in an accident in April 2009.
In a press release Friday, Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold said the county recently settled the insurance claim from that incident.
“I am pleased that we have achieved a solution that is economical and also in the best interest of public safety,” County Executive Leopold said. “A new truck for the Deale Volunteer Fire Department would have cost $435,000, and a re-built engine would have cost $39,000. With the availability of an identical engine from a salvaged vehicle, we can extend the life of this equipment and also get the engine back into service by summertime.”
Deale’s Chief Carl Nutwell told the Annapolis Capital he’s happy with the outcome if the engine works properly. “We felt it should be fixed, and we shouldn’t have had to go to the politicians.”

I’m sure County Executive Leopold will follow up to be sure that the engine from Rivera Beach is in good working order. This is much better than someone losing their home or worse yet their life because the County dragged their feet not repairing the old engine.
