A veteran of the Salisbury, Massachusetts Fire Department was injured Friday when the department vehicle he was working on fell, pinning him underneath.
The Newburyport News reports the 55-year-old Lieutenant, who is also the department mechanic, is in critical condition after being taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital.
Salisbury firefighters were sent home for the day, and surrounding departments covered the station.
"These things do happen — safeguards or not, things just happen. And this, obviously, is tragic. Everybody is devastated. They are very close-knit down here," said Merrimac Fire Chief Ralph Spencer told TheBostonChannel.com.
Authorities have not released any more information about the incident except to say it's being investigated by Massachusetts State Police.
