Maryland Fire Truck May Be Total Loss After Damage From Tropical Storm Lee

Two Anne Arundel County, Maryland fire trucks suffered damage during Tropical Storm Lee, and one of the E-One pumpers may be totalled.

HometownAnnapolis.com reports a 2007 pumper is back on the road after repairs that cost $4,500.

The other rig, a 2001 pumper, has been sent to a specialist for a second opinion after the county shop suggested the apparatus is a total loss.  The E-One went to rescue a county police officer who was stranded when rising water trapped him on a roadway.

According to the HometownAnnapolis, the pumper "suffered engine, transmission, pump housing, electronic control unit and rear differential damage."

it is an ENGINE company, NOT a boat!  we need to learn the limits of our apparatus and not exceed them.  I do not second guess the decisionj to rescue a police officer, however I do think that there may have been other options available.  Consider working with your public works department and disciver the versatility of rubber tire front endf loaders and other construction equipment that CAN move through water and not render a primary emergency vehicle resource inoperable.  Check with your apparatus manufacturer to learn the limits on water height, you will be surprised at how little it takes to either void any warranty or cause this type of loss.  They also have very solid recs for post exposure preventive maintenance to not cause further damage
