Beaufort-Port Royal Fire Chief Sammy Negron says his firefighters did everything right on that afternoon where it seemed to all go so terribly wrong. Many unfamiliar with this line of work have questioned why the truck Kalvin Hunt stole for his deadly joyride was left running as firefighters attended to a medical call.

"There are many systems in the trucks, from sirens to lights to the radio to other emergency systems, medical equipment and so on, that need to be connected to a power source,” Negron said.

He added that the trucks aren't built to just turn off and on. Leaving them running on calls helps prolong the life of the truck. And while there is no anti-theft mechanism in place, Negron says the trucks are designed for those trained in driving them. It's not as simple as turning a key. In fact, there is no key involved in the cranking process.
